It's sad. The people who are meant to actually be helping stamp out spam are sending it themselfs. Heres a real recent support ticket opened on our support queue. I was rather anal to the guy, but spam pisses me off so much!
Here follows a conversation by email that arrived in the company I worked for email support queue.
Mon Jan 27 14:51:32 2003 davidi@netservicesplc.com - Ticket created From: David Iftakhar <davidi@netservicesplc.com> To: "'support'" <support> Subject: ADSL Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 14:54:31 -0000 Is there an interest in re-selling ADSL For a bit of background information we are now BT's fastest growing ADSL distributor in the UK, managing not only our own central pipes but also other ISP's central pipes terminating in our network. We have over 25,000 modems on the Nortel CVX platform, and have no debt on our network ! Our network is illustrated - http://www.netservicesplc.com/internet/serv_ournet.asp <http://www.netservicesplc.com/internet/serv_ournet.asp> . Is this an interest? BT certianly won't release how many ADSL lines a single ISP have, so how could you possibly tell? > managing not only our own central pipes but also > other ISP's central pipes terminating in our network. > We have over 25,000 > modems on the Nortel CVX platform What does a nortel CVX have to do with ADSL or BT CP (which you are presumably trying to sell...)? > Our network is illustrated - Interesting .. where are you guys located? what sort of 24/7 support and fm access do you have? what about air conditioning and security? This kind of mail could be mis-interprited as UCE, which doesn't make you look too good, especially when ISPs are meant to be helping fight spam (ohh, please tell me you are?). This address has certianly never been given to yourselves, or anyone else to request this sort of information be sent to it. We are based in Manchester and own multiple data centres. We are a 24/7 Internet Service Provider. I am not trying to sell Nortel CVX's they basically show how good our network is, as I am also after increasing the companies dial up minutes. Your right that BT won't release information on lines but they tell everyone who is the fastest growing distributor and we can prove that. [davidi@netservicesplc.com - Mon Jan 27 15:42:13 2003]: > and own multiple data centres. where? > We are a 24/7 Internet Service Provider. Well it's a good thing your not a 12/3.5 Internet Service Provider! > I am not trying to sell Nortel CVX's they basically show how good our > network is, as I am also after increasing the companies dial up minutes. But in your initial email, you made it look as if the nortels had somethign to do with the ADSL, which you are trying to sell - which they don't. misleading. > Your right that BT won't release information on lines but they tell everyone > who is the fastest growing distributor and we can prove that. I would be most interested in seeing this proof, i've looked all over bt.com bb/extra site, and there is no mention of who is the fastest growing. I've just phoned BT wholesale sales *and* PR, and they have claimed 'not to release that sort of information'. You didn't respond to my comment on UCE - how did you get this email address for use of commercial email sending, any information on your companies policy on spam? As I said in my last email, we are based in Manchester, our data centres are here (3, one is a carrier grade suite) and 1 in Telehouse and 1 in Telecity. I will only prove our size to you if it meant we did business. I emailed a company from a website reviewed in Isp review, I cant remember the name and then I got a reply from you. Be careful what you say - this can be messleading. you wouldn't want telehouse or telecity on your back for claiming to own them, would you? > one is a carrier grade suite define 'carrier grade' ? > I will only prove our size to you if it meant we did business. No need. We are a ISP ourselves based in telehouse (in DFM50 - a carrier grade suite), complete with our own carrier grade BT Central Pipe. I don't think we're the "fastest growing ADSL provider", but we're doign pretty well. If you're interested in rackspace at 12k per rack, then we may be able to offer you a deal. > I emailed a company from a website reviewed in Isp review, I cant > remember the name and then I got a reply from you. This ticket has been forwarded to all the relevant abuse report addresses (ordb, spamcop, etc) [1], as well as your own companies managment for looking into your companies sales approach with UCE. Have a nice day! [This ticket has now been closed.] ~ Theo [1] - If you had actually admited that you were spamming, i would not have done this. As it is, you didn't, so sorry, but you can't go around randomly spamming companies *support* email addresses who havn't given you their consent for spam to be sent to. -- Theo Zourzouvillys Operations Manager
